Cotswold Carriers – Home Movers Guide (Removal firms)
29 October 2024Do I need to hire movers?
29 October 2024Are you moving home? Donât know where to start? Here are some basic guidelines.
All removal companies appreciate that moving house is stressful, but we believe far less so if you have a plan. Give yourself plenty of time to pack. Two months if you live in a large house; a month if youâre in a flat. Pack up one room at a time and begin the process in rooms less used.
Think of moving home as a great opportunity to take stock of what you have and to offload what you no longer need. Now, as youâre packing, is the time to declutter. Remember, the more stuff you transport, the more it will cost in removal fees. Plus it means less time and effort loading and then unloading at your final destination.
Any items of clothing that no longer fit or you no longer wear will be gratefully received by your local charity shops. You might otherwise hold a garage sale or take advantage of a car boot sale. Or you might want to sell online on eBay, for instance. Any proceeds could of course go towards the cost of moving, new furniture, or set aside for a house-warming party as a reward at the end of all the effort and upheaval.
When youâre packing, make sure you label each box on the top and the sides so you can see whatâs what when the boxes are stacked. Reading the label, our crew can easily distinguish anything that needs special treatment; anything thatâs breakable or fragile. Use a different colour pen to label boxes for each room, making distribution much more efficient at your new home.
Itâs also a good idea to put any screws and bolts inside freezer bags and stick them with masking tape to the furniture or appliance they belong to.
If convenient, do take the opportunity to clean your new property before you move in. Often the previous ownerâs move will have caused a mess. It will be much easier for you to clean before rather than after a move when youâll have all your own clutter to negotiate.
On the day of moving, make sure you have some essentials put by. You should also ensure you have a supply of lightbulbs as you don’t want to find yourself unpacking in the dark. Pack a suitcase or rucksack with toiletries and spare clothes and donât forget to include tea bags, milk and easily prepared food for your first day in your new home.
