Tips on how to declutter for your move

29 October 2024Everyone knows that moving house can be stressful, but the end result is always worth it; a new home to make your own. Once youâre into your new place, itâs important to make it feel as homely as possible, so here are our tips for settling in after a move.
Prioritise your unpacking
All your boxes to unpack can be a daunting prospect. So, rather than think about unpacking as one big job, try breaking it down into small chunks. Prioritise the rooms youâll need first, and start with them.
A good place to start is the living room, as itâs the often the comfiest and most homely room in the house. Once youâve got your living room unpacked and set up how you want, youâll immediately start to feel more at home.
Explore your new local area
Whether youâve changed town completely or just moved a few roads over, getting to know your area is key to settling in.
Whatâs more, in the Cotswolds youâre never far from a good countryside walking route. So, get out and explore whatâs nearby and start to fall in love with your new part of the world.
Put boxes out of sight
The main thing that stops a new house feeling like a home is unpacked boxes. Unpacking always takes a while, but if you know there are some boxes that you wonât get around to unpacking for a long time then try and put them somewhere out of the way.
Itâs also helpful to make sure the boxes are put in the rooms theyâre for. This organises the boxes into more manageable piles and ensures theyâre ready to be unpacked when you get to them.
Give it a personal touch
Your new place wonât feel like itâs yours until youâve put your mark on it and made it your own. But that doesnât have to mean completely redecorating straight away. Just adding small personal touches can make a place feel like home.
If youâve brought things like curtains and rugs with you, make sure you put these out straight away and unpack and display any framed photos to create that homely feel. Itâs also a good idea to put up any art or wall hangings you have, to help you settle in and really make the place your own.
