Advice for moving to Spain

If you are planning on relocating to Europe, then it is important to remember that each European country will have its own requirements for British citizens looking to move overseas. Therefore, you will need to take a look at the immigration entry requirements for Spain before you start planning your move. 

The government states that you can travel to any country within the Schengen area (which includes Spain) for up to 90 days in any 180 days period without a visa. If you are staying longer, then you will need to get in touch with the Spanish government to apply for a visa. Please note that if you stay in Spain with a residence permit or long-stay visa, this does not count towards your 90-day visa-free limit.

You will also need to check your passport validity. In order to move to Spain your passport must be issued less than 10 years before the date you enter the country (check the ‘date of issue’) and valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’). 

Please note that you must tell the UK government offices that deal with your benefits, pension and tax if you are moving or retiring abroad.
