How to Prepare Yourself for Moving Day

To ensure a smooth and efficient moving day, you need to prepare a lot of things. Make sure that these are ready even before the removals crew arrives.

• Wake up a few hours ahead of the scheduled time. You don’t need to wake up at the crack of dawn. Just allocate a few hours so you can get up, take a shower, eat breakfast and finish any last-minute packing. This will allow the removals crew to start their tasks as soon as they arrive.

• Prepare some snacks and meals. Just in case you get hungry while moving, you can easily grab your prepared food on the go. Although ordering a takeaway from a restaurant is a viable option, preparing your own food is a cheaper option.

• Make sure that your devices are fully charged. On moving day, you might need to contact several people to make sure that your stuff will reach its destination. You can not do that if your smartphone is dead. To prevent this kind of hassle from happening, charge your devices (smartphone, laptop, tablet, power bank, etc.) the night before the moving day.

• Wear the right kind of clothing. What you wear will depend on the season of your moving day. During winter, wear enough clothes to keep you warm all day. During summer, wear breathable and comfortable clothes that will not impede your movement.

When packing fragile items, wrap it in bubble wrap or thick padding. Take note of the weight limit indicated in your boxes. Label the boxes with the name of the room it is intended to be placed in.

• Pay unsettled bills. Prevent late fees and losing the paperwork by settling any bills before moving house.

• Arrange your utilities to be disconnected and connected. Inform your utilities provider about your plan to move house. Arrange your internet, gas, electricity and water to be disconnected at your current house and arrange the same utilities to be connected at your new house. Some providers will require you to have access to your new house before they will reconnect their service so a contingency plan would be very helpful, especially if you are working from home.

• Pack an overnight bag. Your moving day will be a long and busy one. To help you settle in faster, pack a few things to prepare you on your first night in your new home; sleeping clothes, flip flops, toiletries, charger for your devices, disposable plates and utensils, and whatever else you can think of. Chances are, you will be very tired at the end of the day and you may not have the chance to go through your boxes to unpack and search for stuff. An overnight bag ensures that you are immediately ready by the time you reach your new home.

• Bring valuables and important paperwork with you. Although you can pack these in one box, it is far better if you will set these things aside and take it with you at all times to eliminate the chance of losing them during moving day.

• Arrange an end of tenancy cleaning or set aside cleaning supplies. If you are renting your property. To fulfil your end-of-tenancy agreement, you can arrange a cleaning company to thoroughly clean your old house from top to bottom. If you prefer to clean the property by yourself, set aside your cleaning supplies so you can access them easily after the removals company are done with their job.
